Walled Garden

Marshall Field’s Walled Garden has been the subject of two separate Foundation projects. First, the original four-acre garden, dedicated to growing fresh produce and flowers for the Field family and their staff, was redesigned in 2001. Considered an adaptive use project, the garden became a quadrangle of native trees, shrubs and perennial flowers separated by crushed bluestone walkways and is now a place for leisurely walks and quiet relaxation. This plan was simplified in 2016 by Ireland Gannon and Associates to reduce the overwhelming maintenance needs.

The second project was the restoration of the 700’ exterior brick walls and wooden gates of the Walled Garden. Beyer Blinder Belle provided minutely detailed plans for its rebuild. The entire southern wall was reconstructed using thousands of individual original bricks. The original wooden gates were replicated. Both projects together cost over $1,000,000 and were financed by the Caumsett Foundation and overseen by the State.
